Occupy Galway removed from Eyre Square
Last night Occupy Galway, the last Occupy camp left in Ireland, was dismantled by up to 50 gardai, helped by council workers. The operation took place at approximately 4.30am, when there were around six protesters in the camp. One man was arrested, while access to the square was restricted for a time. The action came just a day after Galway City Council passed a motion on Monday evening stating that the camp should be removed ahead of the finale of the Volvo Ocean Race, which visits the city at the [...]

Review: Dark Shadows
Since Edward Scissorhands two decades ago, audiences have watched the complex duo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp in wonder and astonishment. Their films range from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street to Alice in Wonderland and each time we are delivered something wonderfully weird and far from the norm. Well Dark Shadows was no different. Based on the original 1960s TV series of the same name, it tells the story of Barnabas Collins, a young man who was cursed by a witch to live forever as a [...]
One Direction: The boy band it’s okay for men to like?
I’d like to admit something; I’m not too savvy with the whole “being a man” thing. I don’t really understand masculinity and I don’t subscribe to it. Though I do know one thing, if there is a “dos and don’ts” list for machoism, and who’s to say there’s not, the adulation of boy bands is near the top of the “don’ts” list. It’s akin to being a member of the Klu-Klux-Klan and listening to N.W.A. Boy bands are the preserve of females and any man to breach this sacred code [...]
Students Across the Country to Decide USI Fees Policy in Online Vote
The Union of Students in Ireland is in the process of re-examining their established campaign for ‘free fees’, and are putting the question to students across the nation to decide the approach it should take on the issue of third level education fees. The USI has set up a special website, www.usivote.com, in order for students to vote on which course of action to take on the matter, ranking their preferences from six funding models. The six available options are a graduate tax, total exchequer funding (the union’s current stance), [...]
